A shower chair makes showering safer

21 Oct 2022 General

Shower chairs make showering safer for people with mobility challenges. I allows them to maintain dignity and independence while bathing by providing a stable and secure in-shower support to sit on and bathe without the fear of falling, while in the shower.

Taking a shower can become exhausting as you age, recover from surgery or deal with a chronic illness. Standing for long periods of time to get clean might not be an option for everyone. Shower chairs offer both the physical support to bathe and help empower you or a loved one.

A shower chair can help conserve energy, because for a lot of people, showers can be really taxing. People start to avoid showering because it’s difficult for them. Sometimes it can be frightening because a lot of people have falls in the shower. If you can equip them with a sturdy support, they’ll feel a bit more comfortable.”

Falls are a real risk for people with mobility, strength, and balance issues. That risk is heightened in the potentially slippery environment in a bathroom

Falls in or near the bathtub are common and result in a significant number of annual emergency room visits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – CDC (see link at the bottom)

While anyone can fall while showering, the likelihood of falls in or near the bath increases as we age. One way to reduce this risk and gain stability is to use a shower or bath chair. These chairs provide support and safety by letting you sit while bathing.

  • Shower chairs, also known as tub chairs, shower seats, shower benches, shower stools, and sometimes commode chairs, are water resistant seating solutions that go inside a shower or tub to provide people who have difficulty standing in the shower a safe seat so they can bathe in comfort and confidence. Shower chairs are made from waterproof, non-rusting materials, such as plastic and aluminum. Well-designed chairs have slip-resistant seats and nonskid foot tips, making them safe to use on slippery or in wet conditions. A sturdy shower chair can help you maintain balance and stability while in the bathtub. This can significantly reduce the potential for injuries, including bruising, concussions, and broken bones.
  • Who should use a shower chair?

The stability provided by a shower seat is appropriate for people who have significant balance issues, tire easily, have leg weakness, and are at a high risk of slipping and falling. These chairs are particularly helpful for people experiencing permanent or temporary mobility issues, as well as those who find movement painful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very comfortable versatile chair

Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022

I bought this chair for my in-laws so they can use it inside their shower stall and also move the chair around for other purposes. The chair takes me about five minutes to put together. The chair is very comfortable for them to sit and dress after shower. It also turns out that this chair can be raised really high even for their kitchen counter so if necessary, they can use the chair for other temporary purpose around the house. This chair does not have suction cups like most shower chairs on Amazon; but it has non-slip rubber tips/cups at the bottom so the chair is very stable in and out of their shower stall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent finally took a long shower

This seat says lightweight and the legs are not heavy but it is a solid solid seat and is very very sturdy. I am right at the weight limit, the seat is large enough for an ample backside and this is very comfortable. I have a small shower in width and the footprint fits perfectly. The height is perfect and adjustable. It was higher priced than most and I am glad I spent the money and not mess around. I feel safe using it for support when washing my hair and not worry about my knees giving out while trying to shower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid shower/vanity seat for my wife.

It came, I snapped it together in about five minutes, put it in the shower and my wife tells me every day how much she likes it and how much more secure it makes her feel. Then it comes out of the shower to the front of the sink and is just the right height to double as a makeup bench. I’m delighted we found this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shower Chaire

I like the sturdiness of this stool, having had issues using others in a similar style I was reluctant to purchase it, however, this stool is great. The seat is comfortable as well as sized to fit as designed in my small shower and tub, which are on the small side compared to today’s, luxury bathrooms. Thank you for a quality product that is safe to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Safety in the Shower

The main feature of this shower chair is the height. It is adjustable, but you can set it at a taller height than most shower chairs. I like that the back of the seat is curved; it feels more secure than the flat stool I had previously used. The chairs are fastened with wing-nut style bolts. The legs do not seem especially stable, but they have been fine in the shower. I appreciate the non-slip caps on the legs. Overall, I like this item and feel safer in the shower for having it. I think it’s slightly overpriced, but I needed the extra height.

I have searched for, without success, a shower bench that would fit into my narrow 15″ tub. I previously purchased 2 of them, and had to return them. I took a chance on this bench and was very pleased, with it. It fits perfectly. It is balanced and when I sit on it, I don’t fear toppling over. This is a great buy. I highly recommend it.
